Lady Miners Roll Past Charleston Catholic

The 6th-ranked Mingo Central Lady Miners opened their season with a big win over Charleston Catholic, 45-29, on Wednesday at Mingo Central High School.

Mingo Central (1-0) fell behind 13-12 after the first quarter before holding Charleston Catholic (0-1) scoreless in the second period and taking a 26-13 lead at the half. The Lady Miners kept Charleston Catholic at bay from that point forward.

Returning Class AA all-state selection Addie Smith led the way with 23 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists. Madisyn Curry was a force under the basket with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks. Alyssa Davis netted 4 points and pulled down 6 boards. Megan Adkings and DeLaney Grimmett each dropped in 3 points. Jeana Bradford chipped in 2 points.

The Lady Miners were 19-of-36 from the field, including 2-of-10 on 3-point field goals. Mingo Central connected of 5-of-10 free throw attempts.

Mary Rushworth led Charleston Catholic with 13 points. Molly Messer and Katherine Skinner each fired in 6 points. Claire Mullen and Annie Cimino both chipped in 2 points.

Charleston Catholic was 11-of-34 from the field, including 1-of-14 on 3-point field goals. The also hit 4-of-8 free throws.

Mingo Central will next play on Monday at Liberty-Raleigh. The opening tip is set for 7 pm.
