The Wayne Pioneers had four players rush for over 100 yards to lead them to a 46-36 win over the visiting Sissonville Indians on Friday at Wayne.
Jaxson Damron started the scoring in the first quarter for Wayne (4-5) with a 37-yard touchdown run and a 6-0 lead. Sissonville (1-7) responded with a touchdown drive of its own to make it 6-6 after the first quarter.
Wayne retook the lead in the second quarter when Braylon Gilliam found the end zone on a 3-yard run. Joshua Dingess hit Rylen Murdock for a 14-6 lead. After another Sissonville touchdown to make it a 14-12 score, Wayne took control the rest of the quarter. Gilliam raced down the field for a 66-yard Pioneer touchdown. Murdock’s conversion run increased the lead to 22-12. Damron rumbled in from 12 yards out for a 28-12 Pioneer lead at the half.
Sissonville closed the gap in the third quarter on the first of three Ethan Taylor touchdown passes, but Wayne responded with 36-yard Colton Mathis touchdown to make it 34-18. Mathis broke free again, this time on a 47-yard run to extend the lead to 40-18. The Indians responded to make it 40-24 heading into the final frame.
Murdock extended the Wayne lead on a 67-yard touchdown scamper. Sissonville added two more scores, but it wasn’t enough as Wayne held on for the win.
Damron led Wayne with 156 yards and 2 touchdowns on 20 carries. Gilliam carried the ball 8 times for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns. Murdock had 8 carries for 128 yards and 1 touchdown. Mathis added 7 carries for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns. Dingess added 6 carries for 15 yards. Kaiden Hayton had 3 carries for 14 yards. Ronnie Staley III finished with 1 carry for 5 yards.
Dingers was 3-of-7 passing for 13 yards and 2 interceptions.
Waylon Forrest caught 2 passes for 9 yards. Murdock had 1 catch for 4 yards.
The Pioneers will next have a bye week before traveling to Poca to finish off the season.
