The Mingo Central Lady Miners picked up a 1-0 win over James Monroe in the soccer sectional tournament on Monday.
After a scoreless first half, Alyssa Davis beat the keeper for a goal midway through the second half. The Lady Miner defense made the score stand.
“Our defense played incredible tonight,” said Mingo Central head coach Jeremy Davis. “Makeisha Harness, Lexie Hager and Dani Browning controlled James Monroe’s advances. Goalkeeper Autumn White was wonderful. She is playing some of the best soccer of her career right now.”
Davis sang the praises of several of his players.
“Megan Adkins provides us with a physicality that we need, as soccer is a very physical game,” he added. “Arianna Belcher and Alissa Munroe always give me maximum effort, and I feel that I can put them anywhere on the field. Nikki Stepp stepped in and gave us an energy we needed. Jessica Acord, Madisyn Curry and Emma Hurley held down the edges for us.”
With the win, Mingo Central set a new school record for most wins in the season and now have a 7-12-2 record.
Up next for the Lady Miners is top-seeded Bluefield on Tuesday at 6 pm.
