Chapmanville Defeats Wayne In Dramatic Finish

Senior quarterback Brody Dalton scored with :09 left to lift the Chapmanville Tigers to a 26-21 win over the host Wayne Pioneers on Friday.

Wayne (3-5) jumped on the scoreboard in the first quarter when Joshua Dingess hit Rylen Murdock for a 2-yard touchdown pass and a 6-0 lead. The score remained the same throughout the first half.

Chapmanville (4-3) took its first lead in the third quarter after a 5-yard Austin Adkins touchdown run. John Ferrell’s PAT kick gave the Tigers a 7-6 lead. Later in the quarter, Kohl Farmer rushed 12 yards for a touchdown, increasing Chapmanville’s lead to 14-6.

Wayne tied it up in the fourth quarter when Jaxson Damron rumbled into the end zone from 57 yards out. Dingess hit Murdock on the conversion pass to make the score 14-14.

Chapmanville then responded when Dalton raced to the end zone from 21 yards out and a 20-14 Chapmanville lead.

The Pioneers then retook the lead on a 2-yard Damron run. Kade Estep’s point after gave Wayne a 21-0 lead before Dalton’s late touchdown squeaked it out for the Tigers.

Chapmanville was led by Dalton who was 12-of-24 passing for 166 yards and 1 interception. He also had 10 carries for 56 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Farmer led the Tigers in rushing with 79 yards and 1 touchdown on 13 rushing attempts. Adam Mullins finished with 12 yards on 1 carry. Adkins registered 2 carries for 5 yards and 1 touchdown.

Mullins led all receivers with 5 catches for 76 yards. Jacob Topping had 4 receptions for 46 yards. Adkins caught 2 passes for 30 yards. Trey Butcher finished with 1 catch for 14 yards.

For Wayne, Dingers was 4-of-9 passing for 13 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He also had 6 yards on 8 rushing attempts.

Damron led all rushers with 24 carries for 225 yards and 2 touchdowns. Colton Mathis finished with 4 carries for 36 yards. Murdock had 25 yards on 7 carries. Nathan Hammer added 4 carries for 11 yards. Harry Sowards had 1 rushing attempt for 8 yards. Braylon Gilliam added 5 yards on 4 carries.

Murdock had all 4 of Wayne’s receptions for 13 yards and 1 touchdown.

Chapmanville will next host county rival Logan (6-2), a 36-14 winner over Liberty-Raleigh on Friday night.

Wayne will host Sissonville (1-6) this coming week. The opening kick for both games is set for 7 pm.
