On Monday night, the Golden Eagles of Johnson Central traveled to Magoffin county to take on the Lady Hornets in a 57th district matchup. The Eagles took control in the first set winning 25-17 and never letting up. Johnson Central went on to win 25-20 and 25-15 in the following sets.
Senior Sydney May led the team with 15 kills. Sophomore Mayson Delong had 7 kills and 4 serving aces. Senior Ava Cochran set up 16 assists and Sophomore Brittany added 10 assists in the Eagles win.
For the Lady Hornets, Sophomore Makinna Caudill and Freshman Mckenzie Young had 2 kills each and Junior Makenna Jordan had 3 serving aces.
This win brings Johnson Central’s record to 7-3 on the season. Their next game is tonight, September 14, against Shelby Valley. Next up for Magoffin county (0-9) is tonight, against Martin county.
As seen on the D & D Sports Network, Betsy Layne swept the Lady Wildcats of Shelby Valley in three exciting sets on Monday night. It was a hard fought game by both teams but the Lady Bobcats stayed on top, winning (25-20, 25-22, 25-21).
It was a full team effort in the win for the Lady Bobcats. Leading the way with 13 kills and 21 digs, was Sophomore Emily Johnson. Senior Madison Hamilton added 10 kills, 22 digs, and 6 solo blocks. Junior setter Lindsey Watkins set up 24 assists. Freshman Christian Howell had 23 digs and 7 serving aces. Junior Akira Keathly added 7 solo blocks. Junior defensive specialist Madi Meade was all over the floor with 69 digs. As a team, the lady bobcats had a total of 159 digs for the night. The D and D Sports Co-Player of the Game honors went to Madi Meade and Emily Johnson.
For Shelby Valley, junior Kyra Looney had 15 kills, 10 assists, and 14 digs. Senior Alyssa Elswick added 4 kills. Junior Jessica Prater had 18 kills and sent over 3 serving aces.
This win brings Betsy Layne to 6 wins and 2 losses on the season. Their next game is at home, tonight, against East ridge. Shelby Valley (6-5) played at Johnson Central tonight, September 14.
The Lady Lions Invitational on September 11 was won by the Boyd County Lady Lions, the hosts of the tournament. The Lady Lions beat three teams to make it to the championship game. Their first game of the tournament was against Lawrence County (25-8, 25-12). The second and third games were against Cabell Midland. Boyd County won the first game (25-11, 25-10) and the second (25-7, 25-21). In the fourth game, the Lady Lions beat Fairview (25-13, 25-6).
In the final game of the day, The Lady Lions faced The Lady Tigers of Paintsville in the championship game. Boyd county took a close loss in the first match 23-25 then came back in the second to win 25-11. The third and final match was a back and forth rally. The Lady Lions sealed the tournament win with a score of 30-28.
Leading the Lady Lions was sophomore Taylor Bartrum with 12 kills, 11 digs, and 3 serving aces. Senior Morgan Lewis added 11 kills, 9 digs, and 2 serving aces. Sophomore Audrey Biggs had 7 kills and 2 solo blocks. Senior Layla Brown had 31 assists and Junior Emma Sparks had 6 kills in the win.
