Hornets Have Reason to be Optimistic written by: Darryl McCoy (Phelps KY)

The Phelps Hornets have had a slow start to the 2021 Football season but after two fairly close losses Hornet fans have reasons to be optimistic. Reason one is the outstanding play of quarterback/linebacker Stevie-Todd Layne, Layne has accumulated 17 tackles in the two defeats and added a couple touchdowns with over 200 yards passing in the process. Reason two is the dynamic play of Bryson Locklear, he has racked up over 200 yards rushing with two touchdowns on the ground. Locklear completed a touchdown pass off a trick play in Friday Night’s Pike County Bowl loss to East Ridge,  and he also added 14 hard hitting tackles between the two games. Reason three is the brute play in the trenches from Senior DT Landon Dotson, a kid ranked as one of D&D Sports “Top5” lineman in East KY/Southern WV. Off double & triple teams, Dotson has still managed to pick-up 21 tackles in two weeks, putting him well on his way to finishing amongst the areas top tackle leaders again this season. Coach Andy West’s squad will host the 0-2 Prestonsburg Blackcats this coming Friday at 7:30pm, this is the Hornets best chance yet to jump into the win column.
