Friday night at Luke Varney JR. Memorial Stadium, the Lawrence County Bulldogs opened district play against the Magoffin County Hornets. In a battle of undefeated teams, the Dawgs and Hornets were coming into Friday night with perfect 3-0 records.  Lawrence County was coming off a huge victory over the Russell Red Devils 39-28 while Magoffin County was trying to keep the momentum after a big 40-13 win against Bellevue.

The Dawgs jumped out early and put this one away quickly.  With 9:13 to go in the first quarter after a botched punt attempt Strickland scrambled 15 yards for the score.  The missed extra point made it 6-0 Bulldogs.  Later in the first quarter, the Bulldog’s Blue Fletcher had a 40 yard scamper down to the 5 yard line.  On the next play he finished it off with a 5 yard carry to score the second touchdown for Lawrence County.  After a missed snap, the  two point conversion was good as Southers ran it in for a 14-0 Bulldog lead.

In the second quarter, it was  Lawrence County’s Dylan Ferguson scampering 16 yards for a touchdown with 11:58 to go in the second quarter. The extra point was good to push the lead to 21- 0.  At the 10 minute mark of the second quarter, Lawrence County’s Dougie Hall scored on a 1 yd run , two point conversion was good and the Bulldogs lead grew to 29-0.

Lawrence County with a balanced running attack had kept Magoffin County on their heals all night.  The Bulldog defense gave the Hornets very little in the first half with only 73 yards of offense most of that coming off the arm of Lucas Litterall.  Litterall was 6-17 in the first half for 70 yards . It was Litterall that hooked up with Aiden Barnett with just 42 seconds left in the half for the Hornets only score.  The extra point cut the Bulldog lead to 29-7.  To finish off the first half scoring Lawrence County’s Blue Fletcher ran it on a 10 yard run to close out the half with 36-7 Lawrence lead.

In the second half, Dougie Hall scored his second touchdown of the night for the Bulldogs.   For the Hornets, Literall found Aden Barnett once more in the second with two long completions for 65 yards and the Hornets were on the board . The final score was Lawrence County 43 Magoffin County14.

In traditional Bulldog fashion, Lawrence County racked up 325 yards of offense with 250 yards coming via the ground game.  Blue Fletcher had 6 carries for 110 yards, Alex Strickland had 49 yards on 4 rushes. Dougie Hall carried the ball 6 times for 60 yards while Dylan Ferguson had 6 carries for 31 yards.  Quarterback Alex Strickland threw for 75 yards on 3-5 passing to keep the Dawgs with a balanced attack.

Magoffin County was once again led by quarterback Lucas Litteral who completed 9-23 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns.  Litteral’s favorite target again was Aiden Barnett who grabbed 3 passes for 62 yards and both Hornets touchdowns.

Lawrence County starts District play 1-0 and  4-0 on the season and will host the Raiders of East Carter next week . The loss drops the Hornets to 3-1.  Next up for the Hornets, they will travel to Belfry for another crucial district matchup.
