As seen on tape delay on D & D Sports, the Martin County Cardinals traveled to Hindman, Ky to face off against the Knott County Central Patriots in the annual Gingerbread Bowl. The Patriots started off quickly striking first as Kizer Slone drove his team down the field for the opening score and an 8-0 lead.
It didn’t take long for the Cardinals to answer. The Cardinals with an unbelievable running attack and aggressive defense scored the next 48 points. The Cardinals controlled the offensive line of scrimmage opening up running lanes that allowed them to run for 394 yards as a team. The running attack was led by Dawson Mills who had 205 yards on 12 carries and scoring 4 touchdowns. The fullback Branson Smith added 85 yards on 12 carries and contributed another 2 TD’s.
On the defensive side of the football, the Cardinal star was their QB/CB Jason Maynard who had an interception return for a 60 yard TD. The defense of Martin County held Kizer Slone to only 206 yards passing and the Patriot team to only 38 yards on the ground.
The final score was Martin County 48 and Knott County Central 16.
The win brings Martin County’s record to 2-2 on the season. Next up for Martin County is a bye week as they prepare for Bath County on 09/24 at the Rock in Inez. The loss drops the Patriots to 1-2 as they prepare to travel to Betsy Layne to take on the Betsy Layne Bobcats on Friday night.
